THE CHALLENGE
Chalice Press publishes books on faith and social justice. Five books, four authors, and each cover had to carry what that author meant by their own book.
WHAT I DID
Worked with the authors directly.
Chalice gave me full access to each author, so the brief came from the person who wrote the book. I consulted with them on the image and the emotion they wanted the cover to carry, and we went through several iterations before landing on the final.

Designed a sequel to relate to a book I had already designed.
Ferguson & Faith came first. Faith Following Ferguson is the follow-up by the same author, five years on, and it had to read as connected without repeating the first one. The Arch and raised hands carry over; everything else is rebuilt.
Handed over print-ready files.
Chalice printed from there. The cover artwork is credited to me on the publisher’s site and on retail listings.
The author knows the book better than I do, so most of the work was listening. The rest was making the case when the picture in their head would not work on a shelf, and changing my mind when they were right.
And the work that is mine rather than a client’s: graphite portraits.
